At Electrical Testing Services (ETS), we have highly specialised electricians that primarily focus on Power Factor Correction Units Testing and Commissioning.

Our NSW team recently completed the testing of three PFC Units with the utmost professionalism.

What’s involved in PFC Unit Testing?

Any kind of testing of live equipment comes with significant challenges and requires increased safety measures, the testing of Power Factor Correction units can pose safety risks but at ETS we are dedicated to safety first, our team conducted the testing fully kitted out in a Cat 4 rated “Arc Flash Safety Suit”.

A PFC unit needs to keep the power factor between 0.98 and 1, the way it does this is by engaging capacitors in stages while monitoring the power factor. PFC units can have as many stages as required depending on the how many Volts Amps the building draws, the most common units have five stages.

Testing these units is as simple as engaging all the stages and ensure there are no thermal hot joints on the engaged stage contractors.

It important these units are kept internally clean. A dirty PFC unit increases the internal temperature which in turn damages the capacitors.  A good visual indication of a faulty capacitor is when it starts leaking or swelling.

During testing it is ideal all capacitors should be tested with a meter to ensure they are in the specifications range.

Benefits of having a PFC Unit

Power Factor Correction units offer several benefits for industrial and commercial:

  1. Reduced Electricity Costs: Improving the power factor through power factor correction not only lowers the demand charge, but enhances industrial energy management, reducing your electricity bill.
  2. Increased System Capacity: It allows you to utilize existing electrical infrastructure more efficiently, allowing for more load without the need for additional capacity.
  3. Improved Voltage Levels: Power Factor Correction can help maintain more stable voltage levels and reduce the risk of damage to equipment.

PFC units can lead to significant operational and financial benefits for many businesses. Enquire today with ETS to find out how we can help you with your service and maintenance needs.
